EL Azteca

Going to try a new wrinkle in covering soccer, the game I love. Going to publish a running diary of tonight's game. Instead of focusing on reporting what is happening tonight, like I did on the DC NYRB game, tonight I am going to talk about how I a fan am responding to this game. I try to be impartial, and for the most part I think I am. But when it comes to the USMNT I can get a little more nationalistic. Tonight I will try to reign that in. I know no one reads this blog yet but I still want to work on this craft of covering sports.

6:35 Pacific ---  By know everyone knows the starting line up. Edu in for Jermaine Jones and Besler in for the, I assumed injured, Clarence Goodson. I personally would have gone with Edu in at center back. I would  have gone with him at center back  regardless if everyone survived the snow game.(prefer his speed and passing ability) And then slot Beckerman and Sacha in with Bradley as a three man midfield. I was really unimpressed with Zusi in Colorado. This would be a bit of diamond with Beckerman in the six    and put Dempsey in the hole. Then move Herc from the left to up front with Jozy.

I know that Beckerman does not have the athleticism that we would all prefer at the six. But he is tactically astute, is rarely caught out of position and is good passer out of the backfield. The problem with my formation is the need to have width from the fullbacks.  Beasley is a natural winger and Cameron is game to run but it could leave the flanks exposed against the talented Mexican wingers.

7:07 Came back from the bathroom, left when the outside the lines piece started, to hear Alexi Lalas trying to say that you need to be proud to wear the national team jersey. I think the idea that dual citizens don't want to represent the US are unworthy is a bit of hyperbole. It is difficult to travel and it is actually easy to get out of it. I really don't think that to many of the players don't want to be there. I think this goes back to another point about some of the old guard, who don't want to see, or offended by the idea of, a change from the US team being a hustle and counter attack team.

7:13 Ochoa and Guzan. Going over the goal keepers. Can't say that really gets me too excited. just want to see the game. Though this ESPN blow coverage is great. Also so nice to not have a NFL theme song, and announcers running the show. I am looking at you Fox. They have gotten better but the regular Fox coverage, although nice was insulting.

7:21 Players about to the take the field.Coverage talking about the crowd for the game. They drop the price for the US to get more true fans not spectacle fans. don't want a super bowl crowd.

7:22 Alexi does not like the idea of taking the game to Mexico at all.

There has been some build up that Azteca has lost its fearsome reputation. Partly the number of US players play in Mexico. Mentioned the vastly improved air quality. I also wonder if part of it is also that so many more Mexican players, than in the past, play abroad, so the conditions, That is the smog and altitude, take as much getting used to as they do for the away side.  Also the pressure on the Mexican team is so high that I wonder how much of them fear as much as relish playing in front of that ruckus crowd that will turn on the home side if they fail to live up to expectations.

7:25 National Anthem. Mexican couch asked the fans to be respectful of the US anthem. And although it was still Azteca they seemed to be more subdued about it.

Kick Off.

30 seconds in and Dos Santos already causing trouble.

Lets see how Besler does tonight.

3' US is taking it to them. Playing in their half and with men forward. If we are to win here we need to maintain possession and not just bunker. Make Alexi eat his words.

5' Dos Santos is challenging Cameron as a right back. Set Pieces and Edu covering Hernandez. Good I like that.

6' Away team has not won a qualifier between these two in 41 years. Sir Ian putting the task in perspective.

7' first bit of Mexican possession and the ole's begin. Good clearance by Beasley.

8' Then salcedo gets in behind. Beasley was high and Besler was still deep. Beasley picks up a yellow right outside the box. Gio buzzes the cross in front of goal but it was high and hard and no one went for it. Need a replay but think Besler should have stepped up for the offiside call.

13' getting sloppy. could have been a penalty on an off the ball play with Bradley  then Omar with a good clearance. if we play high you have to keep possession. something we are not doing

14' cameron needs to do a better job of maintaining possesion.

15' dempsey finds Gomez on a great run. First corner for the US. Cameron had it almost on goal but called for a push. Did not see a foul at all.

20' besler with a yellow card, to slow down gio from a full sprint with the ball

22' good defending on Chicarito so far. keeping the ball, then a low percentage pass to the corner.

24' Corner from the US. horrible delivery from Herc.

26' left 17 wide open for header on a set piece but hits is weakly at guzan. Bad defending good break.

28' got lucky chicarito should have buried that cross.

30' another Mex corner... US now in full bunker mode.

31' better from beasley report states what is obvious he is staying narrow and they are doubling  up wide on the side.

32' Altidore been quiet but they have not got him the ball even long punts have not been in his direction.

34' not playing out of the back, hitting some weak long balls.  Need possesion. this crowd is uneasy but we are not doing enough to keep pressure on mexico.

35' case in point Zusi with a great tackle to win the ball of off garrado then rushes and hits the pass to Altidore to high.

36' as Taylor has said Mexico really pushing and open for a counter. But as Alejandro states you need possession to break the Mexican rhythm.

38' all possesion in first two lines 4-2 bypass the third line to Altidore to try to win all the balls in the air.

39' great build up, Bradley, dempsey and altidore, 1 2 touch passes split up the middle cleared off Bradley s feet in the box. This is why people don't want bradley as teh 6 even though he passes better from there.

41' Altidore mis reads zusi bad give away. quick mexican counter and a horrible cross from garrado saves the US. Chicarito with half a yard going near post. ball gets hi 20-30 yards long of the far post.

43' good punch away from Guzan

44' edu just to hard of pass to spring dempsey down the left.  Team builidng chances off the hold up play of Altidore. Finally passing into the big guy.

46' Altidore gets foule dangerous free kick 4 0 yards out. Ocha knocks it out wide to touch.

Halftime. nil nil .Nothing to complain of for the US but nothing really great either. We played well and kept some possession  Not enough chances but not bad. Will probably look for Sacha or Beckerman to come in and move Edu back for Besler in the second half. Got to watch the yellow cards.

51' Comp problems. Beasley had a nice clearance but came up tight, hopefully nothing serious.

The US came out in a 4312. Moved Herc up top with Dempsey in the whole. but with some switching  morphed  into a 442 with Altidore on the left. An odd look for a few minutes there.

53' beasley is having trouble with aquino. But who doesn't  Beasley gets stepped on now, and omar with a great clearance.

54' Eddie Johnson coming on. maybe zusi?  Maybe but no comes in for Altidore.  Okay that is a surprise, but maybe this will be for a more counter attacking look.

58' Omar with a great clearance with chicarito  splitting the defense. Gonzalez has really impressed me tonight.

59' Mexico is frustrated having trouble getting anything in the box. The crowd is getting restless. Having trouble conjuring up that bit of brilliance in the final third.

67' was putting my son to bed... but nothing really happened. US still playing a 4312. Neither teams is creating much

69' Davis in for Herc. probably moving to a 442 4231.

73. Beasley down injured. great game for him. Beat up little guy but just keeps going. Johnson charged the left mad space, got the byline and overhit the cross.

76' WOW not sure that was a correct call. Edu seemed to have commited a clear penalty comes from behind basically right at the spot. Ref signals a corner and Mexico goes wild. And should. Edu got some of the ball but it doesn't matter a penalty. This was legit unlike the one on Bradley in the first half. It was two handed but slight contact and not at all part of a play.

81' minute Omar Bravo comes in for Aquino. Mexico is going for it

83' Break Shea in for Graham Zusi. Davis moves right. Going to stay with the defense. The center backs are playing well and as beat up as he has been has gotten better as the game has gone on.

86' right now just hold on for the draw

87' WOW just got lucky....  Bouncing Ball in the box and Chicarito wiffs after Besler(I think) did.

89' minute time to get going.

4' of stoppage time,

93' Guzan with a big stop. Really his best save of the game. Corner after corner for Mexico. Finally Goal kick for the US.

FULL TIME...BIG POINT FOR THE US..... Got Lucky on the some calls but that is the best the US has ever played for a full 90 at Azteca.  We did not score like in 09 but we kept a clean sheet, with out a first choice defense. We also maintained more possession.

Great Performance. Good night got an early flight, Family vacation.

MLS Review

For all the people who knock MLS and state is a second division in Europe. How many second divisions have this many players away on national team duty? At the same what other topflight still plays games during and international break? So MLS was on a planed down week, not all teams were effected but most where. So on to a little thoughts on the game. Later today or tomorrow will be back with some thoughts on Klinsman and a preview of the battle in Azteca.

Columbus 2 at DC 1

Columbus broke DC's 19 game home unbeaten streak. DC had some good news in the form of new signing Rafael getting his first goal for the club. But bad news with an injury to Nick DeLeon. As constituted DC is thin upfront. If they don't believe they can have Ruiz go full 90 they have the hard working Pajoy, who rarely looks a threat to score. That puts a heavy burden on talented midfielder Pontious and DeRosario to create the offense. Worse the club has not been able to put its mark in midfield since the injury to john Thorrington. Things are no bleak for DC, but they will only go as far as DeRosario and Hamid carry them at this point.
Columbus meanwhile still has a good team balance and should make the playoffs out of the east. Good performance from home grown Player Ben Speas who got his first goal on the game winner. Man of the Match deservedly goes to Andy Gruenebaum who had a ridiculous double save to preserve the win. Two controversial calls in the game one, Chirs Pontious was taken down in the box by Chad Marshall and deserved to have a PK call. The other a disallowed goal when Pajoy was rightly called for passive offside. I understand that not everyone agrees that it was the right call, and in the future Columbus should play to the whistle not the flag. But it can not change the fact that Pajoy made a clear play for the ball. Although never touching the ball, or preventing a  defender from making a play on the ball, Pajoy did make a run towards the ball only puling up within 3 yards as his teammate, who was onside ran on to the play from the sideline.

New England 0 at 0 Sporting Kansas City

New England is still trying to figure out an identity so road points are hard to come by. Kansas City still retooling from last year and with key figures missing on international duty can not be to disappointed in a tie.

New York Red Bull 0 at 1 Montreal Impact

NY gets unlucky in that they seemed to have figured out how to play a bit last week, but where stonewalled by Bill Hamid. This week without Cahill, (International Duty), Henry and Olave, they had to go on the road to what so far has been the best team in MLS. Montreal may not be the top team at the end of the year, they are not the deepest team, but they are for real. They should make the playoffs and will be difficult points. Unlike other teams whose record so far might have an asterix, Montreal are 4-0-0 with two road wins at Seattle and Portland. Once again Montreal weathered an opposition onslaught unscathed and where clinical on the counter.

Vancouver Whitecaps 1 at 2 Houston Dynamo

Houston took care of business at home and beat a good Whitecaps team.

Colorado Rapids 0 at 1 Los Angeles Galaxy.

Missing most of the marquee names LA trotted out the forward line of Jack McBean and Jose Villareal. Colorado chances where squashed in the 48th minute when Drew Moor earned a red card for a pointless off the ball foul just inside the penalty box. Moor threw and elbow that caught Marcelo Sarvas flush in the cheek. After Mike Magee banged in the penalty Colorado's game was over as they never looked to score. The one bright spot for Colorado after the game is that Clint Irwin, continuing his Cinderella story, played valiantly in denying LA from open play.

Seattle Sounders 0 at 1 San Jose Sharks

San Jose as depleted as they are should beat a half strength Seattle at home. Chris Wondolowski got the goal in this one. Seattle should not be written off,  but they tend to be a bit soft, excluding Osvaldo Alonso, so without there high powered attack they will struggle. Martinez, and Johnson where gone on national team duty, Rosales really needs to people to set up and Zakuani needs someone to make good runs to open up space, and finish. No offense but as Sammy Ochoa and David Estrada are not those guys. It was odd that Martins did not get any play at all in the this game. I will just chalk it up to fitness concerns.

Real Salt Lake 0 at 2 FC Dallas

Dallas has had a great schedule so far. Facing Houston at home right after they lost to Santos Laguna, and this week facing RSL missing six starters due to international duty or injury. Credit to Dallas for making the most of schedule and getting out to a great start. Dallas will probably revert to the center, but having the Dallas heat of summer can help create a home field advantage.  The deadlock was broken in the 70th minute of a beautiful goal  Then the game got crazy as RSL was pushing for the equalizer, Josh Saunders tried to dribble out a back pass but instead dribble right into the oncoming feet of Jackson who scored the second. Then a few minutes later Yordany Alvarez went down with minimal contact a few yards from Dallas penalty box, got back up right away and won the ball back for the play to then be blown dead. Alvarez was given a second yellow for diving.

Now this is where I get on a soap box. I hated that call. It was absolutely the wrong call. Alvarez did "dive" in that he went down with little to no contact but he did not simulate in order to draw call. He went down but there was no flailing  there was no rolling on the ground, there was no looking at the ref in disbelief. He got right back up and kept playing. No Dallas player stopped and no advantage was gained. How is this a yellow card offense. Besides the fact that the ref waited to play advantage, in the defensive third, before blowing the whistle. What was different from that play than if Alvarez tripped or slipped and got back up.

This goes to my second point no where in the rules does it stay a player has to stay on their feet. A player is not even required to ride out a tackle. Jumping or even diving out the way of an oncoming tackle is not against the laws of the game. And in some cases would prevent injury even from clean tackles. I understand the league wants cut down on diving, but how is it cheating to go to ground without any other simulation to induce a call.

Chivas USA 4 at 1 Chicago Fire

Chicago is quickly becoming the worst team in the league, while Chivas is the best story this year. Read that sentence again and think about which team has the veteran leadership and which team has a absent owner with a absurd player retention/acquisition record in the off season. Chivas has shown that with some good coaching and some of there unknown prospects making good on their potential has Chivas looking at making a playoff run.

All Hail the Grounds Crew

Costa Rica 0 at 1 USMNT

Been really struggled to know what to write about the game on Friday  What is left to say. Snow, a goal, a probable protest. DaMarcus Beasley with a broken tooth and putting in a Man of the Match performance at left back. Jermaine Jones getting stitches at half time, playing tough defense and picking up a stupid foul. But of course and insane amount of snow.

So much snow that really after halftime the game was field was unplayable. The only reason that the game was even played was do the grounds crew of Dick's Sporting Goods Park kept the lines clear by shoveling at every dead ball. They are without a doubt the hero's of the night. In all reality if this was anything other than a World Cup Qualifier this game would never have been played. With pressure to get the game in this international break, both teams having games on Tuesday (CR hosting Jam and the US in Azteca) and a  forecast that called for blizzard conditions through the weekend, mean that game was going to be played. It does seem that with forecast being known ahead of time it would have been prudent to move kick of up an hour or two. I assume that television would have been a  impediment but still wondering if it would have at least been possible. It is important to note that at no time did footing seem to be a problem, just visibility and play ability. At times it looked like beach soccer the ball was so slow.

As for play the game had some good US performances. Jozy was particularly active, setting up the goal with his shot, good hold up play and being a handful for the defense. Clint Dempsey was active and scored the goal on the rebound. Michael Bradley actually completed over 80% of his passes in the snow playing as more of a true holding midfielder alongside Jermaine Jones. Jones covered lots of ground, played through a laceration that will keep out of action in Mexico, but still was lucky not to get booked of a pointless push off on Bryan Ruiz in the second half. Goodson and Gonzalez won most of the aerial duels  Brad Guzan played well in near impossible goal keeping conditions, ankle deep snow at your feet, and a wet snow covered ball coming at your goal. And the aforementioned DB making well timed forays forward, and using his still considerable speed to get back and in front of potential Costa Rican attacks. This after a early collision with Omar Gonzalez that left Beasley spitting out parts of tooth throughout the game.  In fact the only player on the US who really did not shine was Graham Zusi who seemed unable to adapt to the conditions seemed to have to many turnovers.

Although I am will post on my take on the Sporting News piece later, I will say this was a good game for Klinsman to see how his team reacts to changing and challenging situations. Personally I think that if we are to use Jones and Bradley in midfield with out a number six behind them, I think that the team is better served with Bradley staying behind. Not that I don't think Jones is capable of the tactical discipline needed for the role. But I do think that Bradley has the passing ability to be a holding midfielder who opens the game up for the offense and maintain possession with accurate passing.  Although with his club team, and normally, Bradley (like Jones) is a hard running box to box type midfielder, he almost seems to see the game better when he is told to stay put.

In this game, with the snow mandating lots of long balls in the air, the center back pairing of Clarence Goodson and Omar Gonzalez was a impenetrable in the Air. However the lack of speed between the two does lead me to worry about how the two will fair against the speed of Mexico on Tuesday. In the end it was a gritty performance in unplayable conditions. It was not a game to asses tactics but to congratulate the will and spirit to win. Three necessary home points.

The Wrap Up

Sorry for the late updates been a tiring last couple of days and other commitments kept me away.

Portland Timbers 1 at 1 Seattle Sounders

The Saturday night match up did not fail to disappoint. Seattle went up one early in the first half as Eddie Johnson ran on to beautiful cross from Steve Zakuani.  The goal was class far post run and finish from EJ set up from a Portland turn over and an afterburner run from Zakuani. Portland Equalized on a 90th minute header from Rodney Wallace, when he was able to get free in the box.

This game was notable for the Seattle debut of designate player Obafemi Martins. Martins came on for the last 20 minutes showed a spark but also that it will take some time to gel with his teammates, maybe even a practice or two. The other notable development of this game is the improvement of Portland Timbers. The new strengthened midfield and possession style of play has paid off. The Timbers were able to maintain the majority of possession, 55% and out shot the home team 13 to 7. Caleb Porter so far has his team playing better defense and mentally tougher on home and on especially on the road. Going forward for Seattle the team will need could really use more players like Alonso to add an edge to what is become a weak team.

Toronto FC 1 at 2 Montreal Impact

Caught a bit of this game and have to say Montreal look strong. If they can stay healthy, a big if with so many aging players, they have a strong spine with the Italian center backs, DiVaio up front and a midfield with Bernier, Felipe Martins and Davy Arnaud, this team will be hard to beat. Toronto also improved from last season with the attacking prowess of newcomers Robert Earnshaw and John Bostock, at the forefront. Toronto is also an counter attacking team but more so out of necessity than by planned design.

Houston Dynamo 2 at 3 FC Dallas

Sunday afternoon had the game of week. Houston visited Dallas for is turning in to a derby in the stands if not on the field. This was an interesting game with long dull stretches punctuated by goal flurries at the end of both halves. Dallas scored two in quick succession George John on a header in the 34th and Andrew Jacobson a minute later. The second half was the same and Dallas looked to be able to hold on until, Andrew Driver in the 79th and Brad Davis in 83rd leveled the game.
The game then had a controversial ending, as Kenny Cooper scored the wining goal in the 90th minute on a play that featured a clear hand ball. Copper goes to head a cross, he mis times it but is able to bring it down off his bicep, and slot home the winner. As Ives Galarcep commented perfectly on twitter
Two thoughts on the play. One is that Cooper kept playing through the whistle and made the play. The second thing that struck me was how much celebrating Cooper did made me wonder if he realized the goal should have been disallowed? Just a thought.

Other bits (games I saw nothing of)

San Jose 1 at 1 Columbus

San Jose keeps on keeping on. Seeming out of the game the Quakes got themselves and equalizer in the 73rd minute from Justin Morrow. I thought that San Jose would struggle more with the comebacks, missing Gordon and Lenhart, but they still find away. Hats off to Frank Yallop and the culture he has fostered in San Jose.

New England Revolution 0 at Philadelphia Union 1

Both teams have some good pieces lets see what they can build on. Looking forward to be able to watch a NE game. Excited about Bengston, Nguyen and Toja.

Chivas USA 1 at 1 LA Galaxy

The other two where about time. This game was by flaw. My cable company does not offer me UniMas, and the game was blacked out on MLSLive. I have read it was a good game. Chivas getting an absurd red card yet still getting an equalizer against big brother the Galaxy is a great script. Have to say I feel that El Chelis will have Chivas competing this year, in spite of ownership. Don't expect them to be great but they will be tougher to play than the last couple of incarnations.

Colorado Rapids 1 at 1 Real Salt Lake

This was typical derby game. Pedigrees did not seem to matter just heart and desire. And on the day it did seem like the rookies of Colorado Dershon Brown wanted it more. At least more than RSL was expecting.

The day got of to a auspicious start for Colorado as Pablo Masteroni was ruled out to start, and then just five minutes into the match veteran goal keeper Matt Pickens broke his forearm after getting it right in front of the head of RSL CB Kwame Watson-Siriobe.  Pickens had to be subbed out and Rookie Clint Irwin made his debut.

The first half went somewhat according to script for the home team whom dominated possession at 70%. However they only managed 2 shots on goal to Dershon Browns 3 on frame and one Goal. The score came when Brown stole the ball of the feet of Chris Schuler took two touches at pace and blasted into the net past Nick Rimando. Brown almost got another when he was able to get between the two center back's, who struggled all day, but hit his shot right at Rimando.

The second half was much better from RSL. They maintain sustained pressure on the Colorado goal. Saborio was finally able to slot home the equalizer off a perfect pass from Plata. Even after going to three in the back, dropping left back Lovell Palmer for rookie forward Devon Sandoval, RSL was not able to get a winner.

Overall RSL will be disapointed in the inabilty to put more than one goal on the board. As well as only having one scorer this season. Although this was by far the most involved Robbie Findley had been since his return to Nottingham Forrest. His substitition, in favor of Jaoa Plata seemed cruel as Findley was by far the most active player in the attack, with RSL playing in early balls behind the defense for him to run onto. More troubling for RSL was the struggle of center back tandem of Schuler and Watson-Siriboe. Whether it was nerves of a home opener against rival Colorado, a lack of communication (between themselves and with goalkeeper Rimando), the tenacity of the opposing forwards, or being rattled after the freak injury and unnecessary yellow card to Watson-Siriboe, the RSL defense was shaky all match. In general, although parts of the game plan have improved with all three games, RSL has yet to really meet in season form.

For Colorado it is a third straight match of talking about goalkeeping. The first match saw Ceus mistake lead to a goal. Veteran Pickens was ruled healthy enough to start again in week two, but also saw the game marked by his mistakes. Today Pickens had to leave within five minutes it opened the door for youngster Irwin who did not disappoint. Irwin easily put in the best shift between the pipes for the Rapids this season. This year so far has been all about youth for the Rapids with Dershon Brown, Dillion Powers and now looking like Clint Irwin leading the team.

Chicago Fire 0 at 0 Sporting Kansas City

After the exciting opening that game was a bit of snooze.

Similar to the morning game the home team had the majority of the possession  but unlike NY, KC had no one to blame for their inability to score but themselves. Where as DC played great defense under constant barrage on net, KC only managed one shot on goal in the first half and only three on target overall.

KC came out strong and looked fluid, the addition of CJ Sapong added some more physicality and athleticism to the KC attack. However after the first 15 minutes of so it became  apparent that  Chicago was going to foul to slow down the KC possession  and KC seemed to become intimated by the physicality. Instead of really going at the Chicago defense they passed around to little success. To many times today KC had a chance only to take one touch to many or sky the shot over the bar.

KC is a different team than last year gone is the dervish Espinoza and instead you have a more cerebral Midfield with Nagamoura and Fielhaber. This team has the quality to pretty possession soccer, which they showed today. However losing Espinoza and Kamara not only slowed the team down, which I would argue is good. KC also lost some forward thrust which is something they will need to address. With the talent on that team odds are that KC will figure out how to play possession first soccer and attack with a purpose. I think moving Sapong center and having Beiler plalying as the second striker or on the wing will help the attack with stretching the field and some height on crosses.

As for Chicago I know it is only a few games but so far they look lost. Although I was only planing on watching/covering the three NBC games and the rocky mountain cup, I pulled up the Toronto Montreal match on my laptop because this game was so devoid of meaningful action. Montreal has a lot more going for it than Chicago, and even Toronto seems more likely to score than Chicago does. I for one am surprised that the Fire can not seem to create much out of midfield with Larentowicz and Lindpere (who did not play today). You expected Rolfe to cause havoc, the only offense that Chicago seems capable of producing. I am not sure that Chicago is going to be able to do much at all this season.

Rivalry Week DC at NY

ROCK FLAG AND EAGLE  9:49 am  that was quite the national anthem spectacle.
For today's games I am going to steal some Bill Simmons idea and do a running diary of all the rivalry week action.

DC has taken off sanchez and added DeRo which should improve their attack from the RSL game.
for NYRB no Roy Miller, not in the 18 and from the comments of Petke he might finally be done with the team.  They bring in Holgerson to partner with Olave, Pierce moves out left while Barklage stays in at Right. Personally think that Kosuke Kimora has shown more than Barklage and will eventually be the starter.  Henry and Espindola up top, with Steele on the left, Dax and Cahill in the middle and Alexander on the Right. Good attacking line up.
Kick off 9:53 am  will go with time on the clock from now on.

3rd minute and Henry with a free kick, off the wall into the air, Henry and Pajoy tangle a bit Henry called for a foul. Thinks Pajoy facked it from the intense stare down.
8th minute DC draws a fould outside of box nothing comes of it.
onthe counter Henry with a shot from outside Hamid pushes out for a corner.
10th Henry looking active today.
15th Henry gets another good look, shot deflected up in the Air, bit of a scrum but DC gets it cleared.
17th Espindoal on the channel... steel get ins a good cross cleared but only to barklage. who takes a crack/cross? inot the D ad clarerd.. sustaind NY presure..
18th Cross to Cahill heads back to espindola... Tangles with **** calls for a PK go wanting...
H19th more pressure Henry and Cahill one two Henry with the shot from angle.. scooped up by Hamid
So far all NY
20th DC early Cross headout by pierce for a  corner. scuffed shot.. half clearted to DeLeon who strikes it high and wide
23rd Henry heads down the route one to a oncoming DAx who scuffs a shot well wide instead of playing back to Henry.
24th Good step up and slide tackle from Olave breaks up s a DC attack...  Good cross Espindola header off the cross bar. Over Hamid but did not drop enough to sneak under the bar.
27th DeRo with a good pass into Pajoy who takes it wide and then passes to Dax. I Know Pajoy battles and runs the channels tirelessly but Carlos Ruiz is much more likely to score.
28th.. not sure what happened there, but good pressure and no shot from NY..
29th to much passing in the box from NY Steele crossed to Cahill who tries to settle instead of shooting when Steele should have take the shot.
30th DeLeon with a good move around Steele on the right sideline.
32nd NY clears a lose ball from right in from of Pajoy. ball crossed int by DeRo. Holgersson deflected Pajoy almost gets to it but cleared
Snow continuing to fall.
33 corner by Henry falls near the penalty stop.
NY still looking more active.
38th Cross headed down but harmlessly.
NY needs to have more of a killer edge in front of goal
Corner Hamid bobbles but falls on his own drop before Alexander can get a boot on it.
40th Cross cleared.but kept in...Henry to Cahill.. get knocked off. Steele on his shot deflected to Henry who fires off balanced high. NY looks likely to score but needs more
41st Henry back to steal the back pass ... Dax with a good ball to the right channel for Espindola but Espindola gets is isolated with no where to go with the ball
43rd Steele into Henry who knees his first touch and goes for an over the shoulder shot  right at Hamid.
44th. can NY get anything before half.
Henry with good ball across the face of goal but no one on the far post in time to get to it..
Half Time NY with lots of good pressure and some decent looks on Goal. both Henry and Cahill look engaged and active for NY. A good sign for the Red Bulls. DC will continue to try to live on the counter. Other than Juninho, not sure what changes NY will make they seem to have their most offensive team out there. As for DC expect to see Carlos Ruiz at some point and possible Santos for some speed.
Back under way and the snow is relentless. Lets see if NY can put together a solid whole game.
Nice to see Petke ditched the hoodie for a jacket but He looks cold.
48th odd sequence Cahill heads back to Steele who chipped towards Goal, Henry tries to just redirect but ended up directing right to Hamid.
51st. foul in a dangerous position DeLeon with a good ball int.. Robles punched away right in front of DeRo head, eventually deflected out for a corner by Espindola. corner comes to nothing
52nd Espindola shouldered off the ball in the box.
55 great cross eventually .. but Cahill can't get the shot off after bringing it down. To be fair thought Henry would take it.
56th Espindola with a blast off the cross bar. 2nd time today for him.
58th Henry with a speculative shot at Hamid from about 35
Then Henry with a shot that goes just wide off an acute angled shot on the left.
60th Pontious with a good shot  but A better play from Robles to close down and block the shot.
61st Henry earns a corner. Corner cleared.
65th Alexander almost strikes a Golazo. Ball falls to him that he hammers that moves just wide of the upper 90.
67 good cross from Steele  that finds Cahill making a great run from deep. Only to be stonewalled by Hamid on the line. Great chance after great chance for the Red Bulls.
68th Junniho in for Steele.
69th Cleared off the line for DC other wise Henry would have had a goal.
70th Henry heads back over the goal Line.
71st Ruiz now in for DC.
74th two more chances for Henry broken up before the shot can get off. This is really good Defense from DC paired wiht some NY looking to pass first a few too many times.
76th. Sanchez now in for DeRo. must not think he is fully fit and DeRo does look gassed walking off the field.
79th Olave with a  good challenge to break disposses an charging DeLeon.
80th Barklage with a cross that floats out for a corner.
82nd. Espindola and Jakovic tussle getting Chippy.
83rd. NY lossing a little steam. To bad they have played well and really pressed forward for a goal. but good Defense from DC and great play from Hamid have stymied the Red Bull attacking talent.
87th Henry chips it towards Espindola but takes a deflection right to Hamid. Another good chance cleared by DC.
89th Henry goes down in the Box, with really no contact. and holds his knee in some obvious pain. Hopefully it is nothing.
90th Connor Lade on for Alexander. NY looks tired  and frustrated.
91st Looked like a goal and a goal line clearance by Hamid. But it was close. Would have been an own goal  but do to pressure from DC.
92nd. Henry who came back on the field was subbed out and went straight to the locker room.
Final whistle. Way more shots on goal from an exhausted NY and some a great defending and Goalkeeping from DC.

Last thoughts. Hope Henry is okay. NY has a lot to be proud of and played there best game of the season even if they get no goals to show for it. Other than the backline  and Hamid DC was thoroughly out played. 24 shots to 4 on the day.

I am not sure NY knows what to do with Juninho yet. He played in an advanced role with Cahill back which is not a bad call. Figure that eventually he will play in a withdrawn forward  or in more of a Pirlo role eventually.

What should not be a surprise to anyone, Henry looks much more comfortable and involved playing alongside Espindola than last year playing alongside Cooper. Cooper, despite his size, is  not a target forward and really thrives when he has another forward to clear the line for him and he can hang around the box and poach. Espindola, although not a hold up player, leads a line by making runs into the channel  that open up space for Henry to make runs in behind. His dynamic movement is a much better front line partner for Henry.

Week 2

Had family in town so did not have as much time to watch games this weekend.

Saturday
RSL 0 at 1 DC United

This game the Road Form of RSL came back to earth. RSL has never won a game at RFK stadium and this week was know different, as United over came there loss to Houston the following week to record their first win of the season. The best chance for RSL in the first half came off of cross to the far post that was just pushed away by Bill Hamid to keep airborne  Saborio from heading the ball in at the corner. DC had a great chance saved when Pajoy passed into the path of a on rushing Pontious who dribbled down the left side of goal and had a shot headed for just inside the post saved by Rimando.
The games loan goal came just before the hour mark off a broken DC corner kick. The ball was hit on the ground to no one, RSL managed a weak clearance that was collected from Man of the Match John Thorrington who hit a sweet chip on goal. The original shot was punched  by a on form Rimando, to a just onside Pajoy who buried the ball into the back of the net. The rest of the half saw sustained possesion from RSL with more pressure on the DC goal coming after the Thorrington injury at about the 75 minute mark. This pressure lead to no goals however. The last highlight of the game came in the last minutes of the game, a save of the week candidate, Rimando stone walled El Pescadito, (Carlos Ruiz) from point blank range. Overall this game was memorable both teams forward cores neutralized and frustrated from the physical play of the respective back lines. Moving forward  DCU will hope that the injury to midfielder, and Man of the Match, John Thorrington was minor and will not keep him out of action to long. Thorrington continual stymied the RSL attack, and kept the midfield from playing playing effective service to the forwards.
DC will be happy to have Dwayne DeRosario back from suspension to partner with Pontious in the attack. Other than the goal and a few decent passes Pajoy spent the entire game petulant about the physicallity of the RSL defense while Panamanian national  Marcos Sanchez looked completely unprepared for the speed of play in MLS.  Sanchez was continual closed down and dispossessed of the ball. As for RSL there is continued encouragement from the strong CB tandem of Watson-Sirboe and Schuler. As well as some flashes from Velasquez* Gil and Stephenson. However Kreis and company will be happy to have Grabavoy and Morales back to hopefully get more out of the forwards* As well the RSL back line will be bolstered with the return of Borchers and  Wingert.

Sunday.

NYRB 1 at 2 San Jose Earthquakes

This was a dreadfully boring game for the first 80  or so minutes. NY was comfortable in charge of the game. Scored a pretty goal with Eric Alexander running onto a beautiful Henry chip that was headed into his path. Even if the play should have been whistled dead, NY still had the better chances and should have scored on a couple of set plays. One a great shot from Tim Cahill that hit Jamison Olave who was offside in front of goal. San Jose really only had a couple of chances, one early on when Fucito somehow skied a cross over the bar from inside the six.
The last 15 minutes however featured a what is now a signature San Jose Earthquakes comeback facilitated by another Roy Miller melt down. Miller, was beat on equalizer by Jahn. Committed an egregious handball on the box that lead to the PK. Then encroached on the initial penalty kick that was saved by Robles. The comeback could not have happened however if not for the three great subs by Frank Yallop. Adam Jahn, Cordell Cato and Sam Garza brought energy and enthusiasm to a team that was lacking in both for the first 75 minutes of the match, with out which NYRB would never have been put under pressure.

Parody.

The Western Conference looks deep again. With both Vancouver and Portland looking improved over last year. Seattle retooling with new acquisition Obafemi Martins. Salt Lake and San Jose looking strong again. The Galaxy bringing back a hopefully recharged and refocused Donovan, plus a DP to be named later. Colorado has impressive youngsters Brown and Powers as well as getting back Pablo Mastroeni. Chivas and Dallas have impressive collections of offensive talent. (Chivas does lack a defense and Dallas looks to lack cohesion or a game plan though both impressions may change.) Chances are that someone with a good record will be left out come playoff time.
While in the East after the ever strong Houston. Toronto shows life by beating a SKC team that has yet to show up for both halves. While NYRB shows promise if not the same affliction as Sporting of not being able to tune in for a full 90. DC has some good pieces and will compete for a spot. While Philadelphia looks game if not under financial stress of paying players not to play for them. New England also has some life with some quality players if not much depth. While Montreal so far has shown to the the most organized team in the league. It may not be the prettiest team to watch, but if they can maintain their defense, which will mostly depend on the health of their aging Italian stars, they will be a difficult to get points off of. Columbus has a great attack with Higuain and Arrieta, but will need Chad Marshall and play some of his best ball to to anchor the defense.  Even Chicago, as flat and dysfunctional as they have looked so far this year** have proven MLS players.

*Velasquez the second year man from Spartanburg Methodist, a Junior College. showed some exceptionable footwork and ball control in tight spaces. The emergence of Velasquez is an intersting case. His fellow RSL second year midfielder Enzo Martinez, played on the same championship club team as velasquez in High School. Martinez, who has yet to see the field at RSL, was highly recruited and went on to star at North Carolina while Velasquez was virtually unknown in College and MLS circles prior to RSL drafting him. This is not a knock on Martinez who from all accounts will become a fine player. But it does show RSL's  ability to recognize the talent and draft him when the college system broke down.

** I caught about 15 minutes of the NE-Chi match, Just enough to see the Bengston goal of a great chip from Rowe. Also heard the commentators talk about Hans Backe repeatedly telling them last year that Joel Lindpere is not a central midfield. So far his inability to form a cohesive partnership with stalwart Center Mid Jeff Laroniwtz, though to soon in the experiment to be definitive, seems to prove Backe right.

MLS opening Kick

Thoughts on the games I watched and MLS first weekend.

Colorado Rapids 0 at 1 FC Dallas.

Lets be honest making the playoffs would be a good season for either of these clubs. The game itself was rather nondescript neither side to much with the ball, It felt like Colorado was more likely of the two to score through out most of the game. The goal came off a error from the goalkeeper. Would like to say that it took a odd hop but It looked like Beus over committed, left the box and was not able to elevate high enough to head it out. Hopefully that is just a mistake of a inexperienced keeper, and one that he will not make again.
Dallas was the team with all the fire power on paper, but it was Colorado, with veteran Atiba Harris* playing the role of pest and promising rookie Deshorn Brown with the goal scoring oppurtunities. Brown and second year man Dillion Powers look, after one game, to be solid players and a good future for Colorado.
As for Dallas, count me as skeptical of Kenny Cooper being able to recreate his goal total from last season. Even with all the fire power around him, on paper Dallas has the makings of a offensive juggernaut, Defenses can key in on Cooper, and he does not have Henry and Cahill to draw the watchful eyes of opposing defenders. Not to mention how to figure out how to get enough playing time for Cooper, Eric Hassli, Blas Perez, David Ferriera, Fabian Castillo and company. A potent attack is their am not sure that Schellas Hynedmena can figure out how to make it work.

Impact Montreal 1 at 0 Seattle Sounders

A great win for the French Canadian Azzuri. For Seattle other than the great debut of home grown talent, Denadre Yellin**, it was a mostly forgettable game. Seattle's Midfield and Defense lacked Osvaldo Alonso. In attack Eddie Johnson missed the presence of Fredy Montero. The Columbian for all his unrealized potential, had the ability to, hold up, come back to midfield and play creator, as well as lead a line, all of which tended to create space for Johnson. Moving Forward they need to figure out how to create more space. With Mauro Rosales, Mario Martinez and Steve Zakuani they should be able to create more chances for EJ.
Montreal,  the Serie A retirement home, played a great Italian game. They kept there shape, defended as a team and then looked dangerous on the counter. Most of the chances of the night where with veteran Marco Di Vaio trying to beat the offside trap. The loan goal was a product of Di Vaio knocking back a ball for an on rushing Davy Arnaud to finish.

NYRB 3 at 3 Portland Timbers

Game of the weekend. The first half was belonged to the Red Bulls. The first of the NYRB goals was scored when RSL import Fabian Espindola (with a haircut) pounced on a bad backpass by New CB Mikel Silvestre. The Second was from Silvestre mis reading the bounce of the Field turf letting Espindola bag a brace. The third was after a set piece with fellow RSL import Jamison Olave getting away from Silvestre again. This really was the extent of NYRB offense. Non of the three DP's Henry, Cahill or Juninho did anything memorable. Non did anything wrong but neither did they leave and imprint in the game. Especially in the second half when NYRB was bunkered against a continuous Timbers attack. There has been some talk about travel being a reason for dead legs for the end of the game and that may be, at least partially to blame.
The Timbers first goal came in the first half from a splendid piece of skill from Argentian new comer Diego Valerie. Easily the goal of the week, the DP took the flicked the ball on the run and dribbled twice before cooling flicking the ball with the outside of his foot into the corner of the net. The second Goal was scored from Darlington Nagbe banging home the rebound of a Diego Valerie shot. The third came off a own Goal when substitute Jose Adolfo Valencia knocked in a cross off of Jamison Olave. Timbers where also denied a penalty, when Heath Pierce brought down promising young defender Jean Andrew Baptiste in the box. Though scoring three goals the score line flattered the visitors. The first two Goals where off of mistakes that hopefully a veteran like Silvestre will remedy, by learning the bounce of field turf, and more familiarity with Ricketts. Silvestre passed it to the foot of Ricketts who anticipated the ball being let to roll through for him to handle instead. The Second half belong to the Midfield of Timbers. Newcomer Valerie looks like a star in the making, while Nagbe, playing under his old college coach showed for prolonged stretches what he only showed in flashes in the past. Also adding to the Timbers new attitude was new Captain Will Johnson. The Former RSL man patrolled the center of the pitch with bite that has been missing from recent Timber teams.

Real Salt Lake 2 at 0 San Jose Earthquakes

This game was a bit of a let down after the frenetic pace of the nights earlier match in Portland. The first half was mostly devoid of chances. San Jose's striker, and last years Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski, had two decent looks at goal which he failed to put on frame. Neither was an egergious miss but both where scoralble and San Jose would expect more from there striker. The second half really came alive when Joao Plata replaced Robbie Findley for RSL. The dimunitive forward soon become a pest, making telling runs, using his 5'3" frame to hold the ball up, and chipping a wonderful ball for Alvaro Saborio to run onto for the first goal. The second came from a Kyle Beckerman assist to Saborio after continued spell of possesion for RSL. The build up had 12 passes from RSL most down the right channel and near the box.
For all the prognosticators believing that Salt Lake would be the team to regress in the west, the night showed them to be a superior team than San Jose. Last season, the quakes benefited from an phenomenally healthy season. They seem to have regressed to the mean already with a long list of injuries to start the season. The other factor in San Jose's success last year was a large number of come from behind victories on late goals. Most of those came about through the tireless running and pressing of Stephen Lenhart and Alan Gordon, both of whom star out the season injured. I don't think it can be underestimated the how much the willingness of Lenhart and Gordon to harass defenses trying to close out the last few minutes of games led to so many late goals last year. With out either of them or anybody else willing to do that work RSL was able to pass it around to close out the match. Where as RSL major losses seem to be decently covered by already present players, like Gil, Schuler, Mansally, Watson-Sirobe and Velassquez stepping up. And key acquisitions of Findley, Plata and Kahri Stephenson leaving RSL with even more depth than at the start of last season.

*Once saw Atiba Harris get a red card in an exhibition match against Real Madrid as Dunseth said during the game Harris only knows how to go all out. And for fans of teams that he has played on know, that usually leads to reckless tackles.

**Would be interested to find out why he was not on the U-20 team.
